Looking for songs to accompany your late nights?
After a busy day, I feel my feet finding their way to my empty room, my body drifting instantly to my soft bed, then I catch my eyes wandering to the ceiling, reflecting on my day and getting in touch with my feelings after brushing them off all day long. Overwhelmed, that’s all I can get in my mind. Hectic days can get you so overwhelmed and tired, you might want to listen to some soul music while getting in touch with your feelings and thoughts. Here’s the top 3 songs to accompany you through the moment including with my reviews and analysis.
Waiting room – Phoebe Bridgers
Waiting room by Phoebe Bridgers is
truly a lyrical and melodical masterpiece. Phoebe Bridgers was always known for
her immaculate writing skills and her ability to express raw emotion in such a poetic
way, and I opine that this is one of her greatest masterpieces.
“Know it’s for the better.”
This line means a lot to me. Being a girl with lots of ambition inside
of me, most of the time, I can’t seem to accept that things don’t always go
according to my plans. Because of my resentment, I became bitter, but all I need
to hear is “Know it’s for the better.” Simple, yet touching. The repetition on
this line through this song just helps me to calm down and accept that
everything is for the better and I must accept it even if it’s hard. The verse
uses lots of analogy or symbolism such as
“If you were a waiting room, I would never see
a doctor
I would sit there with my first aid kit and
bleed”
This verse symbolizes the
unconditional love for someone to the point that we would “bleed” for them.
Represents
being forced to surrender to the inevitable situation and trying to accept the
situation by forcing to think that it’s for the better. The repetition of the
line “Know it’s for the better” Could be interpreted as lots of things, trying
to force our mind to think that everything happens for a good reason or acceptance
of the situation. The melody of this music and the arrangements were perfect for
late nights, the repetition helps shut the noisy thoughts in my mind and helps
me to relax. This song could be calming and hopeful yet somehow realistic and deep.
This is the song that played everyday during my lowest point and has truly
brings lots of comfort for me and I hope that it could bring comfort to you too.
Vienna – Billy Joel
“You're so ahead of
yourself, that you forgot what you need”
The title “Vienna” is usually used
for a metaphor of growing older. Being used to academic validation since little
has shaped me into an ambitious being who thinks that I could do anything by myself
and has a tendency to push myself too hard and will try my best to work like a
robot, sleeping maybe 2-4 hours a day when I can’t get the result that I want,
which leads into having a total crash out and burn out. These lyrics reminds me
to wind off and take some time off for myself so that I won’t burn out, to not
be too harsh on myself. Everything has their own time to happen and I must not
be too ambitious to force things to happen before their time.
However, this song also evoke my
spirit to achieve my ambitions through these lyrics:
Only fools are satisfied, it is okay
to take break but I must not give up and be satisfied with what I have. I must
have bigger dreams and try my best to achieve it, however, I must not set an expectation
that they’ll all come true because not all things can go the way that we want
it to be. This song is realistic and full of hope at the same time. This song
feels like a “brake” or reminder for me to stay sane and not to unintentionally
myself just because I was driven by my ambition. It is really suitable for my
ambitious and hardworking fellows who needs to wind down after a hectic and
stressful day.
That Funny
Feeling – Phoebe Bridgers
I bet you
guys are familiar with this song, it has been my “national anthem” during the
pandemic. Slow and melodic, with nature sounds in the background and soft
guitar strums, leading our mind to imagine a campfire scenery. This song is actually
a cover of the same song by Bo Burnham, but Phoebe did it so well that some
people didn’t even realize that it was a cover (I used to be one of them). This
song contains lots of emotional lyrics that made me reflect on my emotion
throughout the day.
“There it is again,
that funny feeling”
These
lyrics made me look deeper into my emotions, discovering the layers of emotion
buildup that i was creating by suppressing my emotion throughout the day,
eventually finding out what’s causing this “funny feeling”. The repetition of
this line accompanies me throughout the journey of discovering new emotions
that unfolds each time the line is repeated.
These
lyrics describes the feeling of derealization or never feeling like you actually exist and the
feeling that you never belong anywhere. It expresses the eerie disconnect
people feel with the world. It's about the overwhelming strangeness of modern
life and the numb acceptance that accompanies it. It captures a sense of confusion
and dread, yet strangely comforting due to it’s honesty. I relate a lot to this
song and somehow felt comfort through it. So, if you are overwhelmed after
trying to fit in but never feeling like you actually fit in, this is the song
for you.
